Friedrich Merz, the leader of Germany’s opposition conservatives, won the national election on Sunday. His Christian Democratic Union party secured 28.5% of votes, the highest share in the country’s general elections.

Merz, who has never held a government role, will now take over the reins in Germany, at a time when the country is reeling under economic and diplomatic crises. The conservative leader has a mandate to form a coalition government. However, experts signal that these talks could last several months, leaving a vacuum at the heart of the European Union.

On his victory, United States President Donald Trump described it as a result of Germany getting “tired” of “no common sense agenda.”

Who Is Friedrich Merz?

Friedrich Merz, a former banker, will succeed Olaf Scholz, who has held the office since 2021. On his victory, the 69-year-old leader vowed to help give Europe “real independence” from the US.

Friedrich Merz became the party’s parliamentary leader in the 2000s. He hails from Sauerland, a region in far western Germany, known for its close-knit village communities and social conservatism. In addition to being socially conservative, Merz was once described as a transatlanticist and business-oriented.

East Germany remains Merz’s weak spot, and with anticipated long coalition talks ahead, he faces many challenges. Amid growing geopolitical tensions and Trump’s entry, Merz faces months of coalition talks to form a proper government for Germany, which is entering its third year of crisis.

Merz has been married for 40 years to Charlotte, a judge. Seen as a “good candidate” for the Trump era, the anti-immigration supporter is known for his excellent spoken English and negotiating skills.

In January, Merz pushed for a resolution in parliament, seeking a crackdown on migration. This was after two high-profile killings in which immigrants were the main suspects.

While Merz has insisted he would never form a coalition with the anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland, Ulf Buermeyer, host of the popular podcast State of the Nation, believes he might backtrack. Merz may break the “political rule” of keeping the AfD out of power, if it means gaining their support to become the next Chancellor.

A keen aviator, Merz owns two private jets.
