Filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) is a crucial financial responsibility for every taxpayer. It is important to note that ITR filing for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26) has already started. Among the several formalities that you must complete to file returns is the bank account validation.

Bank account validation ensures that you get refunds against various claims and excess tax deductions. However, several taxpayers often fail to validate their bank accounts while filing ITR. Resolving this issue is essential to ensure a smooth ITR filing process.

This guide explains the reasons behind the error and steps to resolve it.

What Is A Bank Account Validation Error?

When filing your ITR, you need to provide bank account details where the Income Tax Department can deposit any tax refunds. A bank account validation error occurs when the portal cannot verify the account details submitted by a taxpayer. This could delay your refunds.

Possible Reasons Behind Bank Account Validation Error

Bank Account Not Linked to PAN

The bank account must be linked to your Permanent Account Number (PAN) for validation. If it isn’t, the portal will reject the details. You can contact your bank branch to link the PAN with your bank account.

Incorrect Bank Account Details

You may have entered the wrong bank account number, IFS code, or made spelling errors during the validation process.

Closed or Dormant Account

If the bank account is inactive, closed or dormant, validation will fail. In this case, you could try a different bank account number or contact your branch for more information.

Steps To Re-Validate Your Bank Account

1.    Visit the e-Filing portal and log in with your user ID and password.

2.    Go to the ‘My Profile’ page from the dashboard.

3.    Click on ‘My Bank Account’.

4.    Go to the ‘Failed Bank Accounts’ tab.

5.    Select ‘Re-Validate’ for the bank account that needs revalidation.

6.    Verify and update details on the ‘Add Bank Account’ page.

7.    Click on ‘Validate’.

Once the account is validated, you can see it under the ‘Added Bank Accounts’ tab.

To conclude, by verifying your bank account details and ensuring your PAN is linked with your bank account, you can resolve the error efficiently. Filing early and keeping your details updated is the key to a hassle-free ITR submission.
